Symptoms of TMJ

Pain, soreness, stiffness, and swelling will be the first of TMJ symptoms a sufferer feels on the jaw area. Together with this will be a limited use of the mouth when opening and closing it, as doing so will cause mild to severe pain, depending on the extent of the condition. A locked jaw may result when the jaw is moved beyond its now limited and restricted condition, and. snapping or popping sounds will emanate from the jaw joints. In its weakened and deteriorating condition, muscle coordination will be compromised,  resulting in an uncontrollable use of the jaw. In this state, the jaw may drop to either side of the face.

Pain will radiate to other nearby areas of the region: the ears, the throat or neck, head, face, shoulders, and to even the hands. The sufferer will feel ringing sensations in the ear, and will be hard at hearing. Throat pain will make swallowing hard, and there will be feelings of soreness and tightness on the neck area. Migraines will be felt, burning sensations may also be felt on the eyes and cause it to water, as well as pain in the shoulders, further bringing discomfort that extends to the arms and hands.
